One of my favorite writers is John Scalzi, both for the novels he writes, as for his online personality. I follow his blog and Twitter feed and just really enjoy his style. A while back I read the first novel in his series Lock In, about a disease (Haden’s Syndrome) which causes a lot of people to be “locked in”: fully paralyzed, unable to move, but awake at the same time. Society deals with this by developing a digital solution so these “Haden’s” can live and work. This novella describes the start of Haden’s Syndrome and the research and reactions surrounding those first days.
